"The problem with our industry has been that we have never had a color separation method that was proprietary to what we do," says Charlie Facini, president of Freehand Graphics Inc. ![]() ![]() All of the programs in which a screenprinter typically works are designed toward eventual paper substrate output, and offset printing techniques do not translate well to the textile printing process: Print parameters such as dot gain, opacity, angles and line count are completely wrong for the textile substrate. Quite simply, it's a matter of tonal image reproduction. You might reasonably ask why a dedicated piece of color separation software is necessary. The truth, though, is that with a computer, an image-editing program like Adobe Photoshop, and color separation software designed for textile screenprinting, you pretty much can print anything you want. To an extent, the screenprinting industry has come to accept that it can't always produce exactly what people want. The public is bombarded with thousands of arresting images every day - television, movies, magazines, billboards - and people fail to understand why they can't buy an imprinted shirt that offers the same visuals. ![]()
